I am occasionally asked to recommend autism-related resources. Here are some of my favorites.

Websites

  • The Transmitter is an online publication that used to be focused on autism but has since expanded to cover neuroscience in general. The site’s autism articles remain an excellent resource, particularly if you’re looking for a scientific perspective on the subject.

  • Cynthia Kim’s blog, Musings of An Aspie, includes many insightful posts about life on the spectrum.

  • Embrace Autism breaks down autism terminology and shares research in a lay-friendly format. Some of my students particularly appreciate this list of autism “superpowers” and “kryptonite.”

  • REEL 2e provides excellent resources for twice-exceptional students and their families.

  • ADDitude magazine focuses on ADHD, but because there is overlap between autism and ADHD, many of its articles are relevant to those on the spectrum. They offer valuable practical tips for tackling day-to-day executive function challenges.

Books

  • Nerdy, Shy, and Socially Inappropriate by Cynthia Kim

  • Thinking in Pictures by Temple Grandin

  • Rules by Cynthia Kim (middle-grade fiction from the perspective of a girl with an autistic brother; I appreciated the nuance and complexity here)

Objects

  • Loop Earplugs have changed my life. I can’t recommend them enough.
